Description:

Celebrate artistic achievement at Lake Country Art Gallery with MFA thesis exhibitions by UBCO students. Jessie Emilie's 'Spiritual Growth' redefines the female nude, while Troy Teichrib's 'Departures' blends graffiti's raw urban energy with studio spaces.

Five accomplished MFA candidates have reached the culmination of their academic journey at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan.

Among them are Jessie Emilie and Troy Teichrib, whose final-year artworks will be on display at the Lake Country Public Art Gallery from May 18 to July 14, 2024.

Jessie Emilie: Spiritual Growth: The Unapologetic Nude.

Jessie Emilie, an MFA sutdent at UBCO, explores female empowerment through large-scale nude portraiture. This thematic exploration challenges prevailing unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by media and confronts the constraints imposed by religious teachings concerning purity.
Through painting, Jessie navigates the complexities of these narratives, advocating for self-acceptance and celebrating imperfection within the human experience. Set against domestic and natural scenes, her paintings symbolize spiritual growth and resilience.

Troy Teichrib: Departures: Bridging the Gap

Troy Teichrib, an MFA student at UBCO, captures and combines the raw energy of graffiti art within structured academic & gallery spaces. His mixed-media paintings reflect a dialogue between creation and destruction.
This methodical yet chaotic process of uncovering and reviving elements from dense chunks of accumulated graffiti is a meditation on ego, ownership, and the impermanence of art. By overlaying and then meticulously removing layers of his own work, he confronts the challenge of disassociating from the personal motifs and styles that have defined his artistic identity.
