This is a groundbreaking forum aimed to foster understanding between Palestinian and Jewish perspectives on the violence in the Middle East.
Conversation Café in collaboration with the Peace & Reconciliation Network is proud to host " Bridging the Divide: Opportunities for Understanding" on November 30th, 2024 at Metro Hub.
This is a groundbreaking forum aimed to foster understanding between Palestinian and Jewish perspectives on the violence in the Middle East. The event seeks to create a safe space to promote a deeper understanding of the complex Israel-Palestine conflict. Through respectful addresses, clarifying questions, and moderated Q&A, we will hear diverse viewpoints at the same time respecting and safeguarding all participants. Both Dr. Munayer and Dr. Finkleman are committed to promoting understanding and peace outcomes regardless of differences and their desire is for all who hear and attend the event to commit to the same.
“This is an opportunity and privilege to be able to exchange ideas rather than rockets.” says June Forman, founder of Conversation Café.
Scheduled from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the event will be moderated by Phil Wagler, Global Director of The Peace & Reconciliation Network.
Keynote Speakers:
The event will feature keynote speakers, Dr. Salim Munayer
1. Dr. Salim Munayer - A Palestinian Christian scholar and peace advocate, Dr. Munayer is the founder of Musalaha, a reconciliation ministry. With over three decades of experience in peace work, he has been guiding Israelis, Palestinians, Christians, and internationals towards mutual understanding. Dr. Munayer's co-authored book, "Through My Enemy's Eyes," written with Jewish author Lisa Loden, exemplifies his commitment to bridging divides. His most recent publication, "Reconciling Justice" (2024), further cements his authority on the subject of reconciliation in the Middle East.
2. Dr. Steven Finkleman - Steven Finkleman, a long-time resident of Kelowna, has served for several years as president of the Okanagan Jewish Community, centered in North Glenmore. He has traveled extensively and appreciates the diversity of various cultures and faiths. His presentation will be factual, focusing on many historical details that many may not be aware of. The current climate of polarization has led to significant misunderstanding of the situation scuttling attempts to come together in understanding the underlying historical facts. The presentation will end on a positive note with a discussion of the similar hopes and values of the three Abrahamic Faiths. We have much more in common than divides us.
"The perspective offered by Dr. Munayer will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to understand the complexities of the Israel-Palestine situation through the eyes of those one who have devoted their lives to studying and addressing these issues," says Wagler.
The program will include:
Keynote presentations by Dr. Salim Munayer and Dr. Steven Finkleman
Clarifying Questions from the Moderator
Moderated Q&A sessions
Breakout sessions for refreshments and exhibits
This event is open to the public and is designed for anyone seeking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
