'Relief, Push, Woe (RYB)' is an exhibition by contemporary Canadian artist Connor Charlesworth exploring his ongoing interest in the relationship between images, objects, language, and representation.
Taking place in the Window Gallery of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Charlesworth presents a body of paintings in combination with wall drawings and text, creating a relationship between the different components. Charlesworth is interested in the ways this network informs, complicates, and influences one another to generate meaning for the viewer.
The title of this exhibition derives from an archived list of words the artist used as jumping off points for his work. As Charlesworth describes, these works are “emotive responses which reflect the urgency of a specific moment in time”. The works also reflect the network of emotions felt over a period of time; for example, how someone can feel relief and woe simultaneously.
Connor Charlesworth received his MFA from the University of Victoria (2018) with a specialization in painting, and his BFA from the University of British Columbia in Kelowna, BC (2015) where he currently teaches drawing and painting for the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.
