David Jacob Harder’s Tired Sphere explores how the environment is changing in unforeseen ways as a result of industrialization, development and expansion.
Rooted in an investigation of the growth and decay of organic materials, his practice creates avenues for physical engagement with animate and inanimate materials.
Ponderosa Sphere by artist David Jacob Harder was unveiled last year, and was developed in partnership with the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art and the Lake Country Public Art Commission.
Instead of dismantling the project, the Alternator, the Lake Country Public Art Commission and David Jacob Harder will be revising the original sculpture, but this time using another form of found materials – blown out tires found on local highways. Harder explains, “My focus for the spheres are alike in that I am in search of decaying membranes, the manufactured world has many similarities to the natural as I believe our formula in innately entrenched in biomimicry. I am interested in how tires are like our bark and the conversation of (un)natural decay.”
David Jacob Harder is a Canadian interdisciplinary visual artist and curator. Born in Quesnel, British Columbia, he earned a BFA in Visual Arts, as well as a BA in Social History, from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. David has shown in numerous public exhibitions across Western Canada and the US and continues to develop his work in his home in Wells, BC.
