This concert celebrates the lush and visceral music of the French romantics before the impressionists came on the scene. Berlioz uses two sets of timpani to drench the Royal hunting party in a ferocious storm. Lalo imprints the influence of his Spanish heritage onto a Germanic structure in this symphonic concerto which will show off Timothy Chooi’s fiery technique. Saint-Saens added the king of instruments to elevate the impact of his Symphony No. 3. This is symphonic music of power and panache.
