Trep Talks With Shawnee Love - Hazards Of The Gig Economy
Date:
Wed, Aug 23rd, 2017Time:
12:00 pm to 1:00 pmDescription:
At this talk, we'll explore the Gig Economy, the benefits of being self-employed and the frustrations that we need to solve together.
The gig economy is already changing the way work happens all over the globe. The question isn’t whether the gig economy is going to change industry when it arrives - the gig economy is already here. The question, rather, is about what society at large will do in response to this changing landscape. Are governments, businesses, workers, and consumers prepared for this brave new world? Or are they fighting a losing battle and clinging to outmoded, backwards ideas about work?
The gig economy is going global, bringing with it benefits but also risks. For workers in many countries, gig labour offers flexibility and the potential for higher income, but also downward pressure on pay, long hours, discrimination, and lack of social contact.
At this Trep Talk, we’ll explore the Gig Economy and the realities of making it work for you. What are the benefits of being self-employed? What are the frustrations that we need to solve, together? We’ll also give participants an opportunity to talk about the individual challenges they may be facing, strategies they’ve used to solve these frustrations, and what they wish they knew when they first started out.
