Belle Plaine is a singer, a songwriter and an inventive musician who was raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 45. The ingenuity, lonesome yearning and collaborative work ethic of country life have infiltrated her songwriting, her sound and her methods. Belle’s reverence for artists who defy categorization has led her to create a brand of roots music that combines vintage blues and swing tones of the 1940s with classic country styles made popular in the heyday of the Grand Ole Opry. Belle’s greatest strength is an unfailing ability to weave stories, genres and emotions with her formidable voice. Read more

Okanagan Symphony Orchestra: Meaghan Williams - Themes And Innovations

All of these works begin with a theme: one borrowed, one created and one taken from the pages of history. Vaughan Williams reached back to the 16th century to create his Fantasia. Elgar created his own enigmatic theme with variations based on each of his close friends. Mark Haney’s bass concerto is a world premiere. Composed especially for our own Meaghan Williams and the OSO, it is inspired by hymn tunes played at a secret World War II meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt in Placentia, Newfoundland. This youthful international trio, American violinist Andrew Sords, Australian cellist Luke Severn and Canadian pianist Cheryl Duvall, first performed in Ontario and Quebec. This year, they focus on two of Beethoven’s most epic works for this instrumental combination: the foreboding C minor Trio, written by a 24 year old Beethoven; and the profound “Archduke” Trio, the performance of which was Beethoven’s last public appearance as a pianist.
